Inaccuracies

RDA Rule 1.7.9 is for "Inaccuracies". It instructs that When instructed to transcribe an element as it appears on the source, transcribe an inaccuracy or a misspelled word unless the instructions for a specific element indicate otherwise.

There are some exceptions to this rule, for example rule 2.3.1.4 of RDA.

It also instructs to make a note correcting the inaccuracy if considered important for identification or access (based on 2.17).

Also if the inaccuracy appears in a title and a corrected form of the title is considered important for identification or access, this RDA rule prescribes to record a corrected form of the title as a variant title.

Resource Description & Access (RDA)

Question: In a book the name of the author is "inaccurately" printed on title page, and correct name is given on pages inside the book. How to transcribe it?

Answer: Based on guidelines mentioned above transcribe "as it is" found on the title page in the subfield "c" of MARC tag 245. Then make a "Note" of it in MARC21 500 tag.

From above description we get "... ... make a note correcting the inaccuracy if considered important for identification or access (based on 2.17)".

[2.17.3--Note on Statement of Responsibility>>2.17.3.4--Variant Forms of Names-->Make notes on variant forms of names if: the names of persons, families, or corporate bodies appear in the resource in forms that are different from those recorded in the statement of responsibility and the different forms are considered important for identification.]

See lccn: 2014348021 in Library of Congress Catalog in MARC21 view. Also check the established Name Authority Record for the name printed inaccurately on title page.

Please provide your comments on this interpretations of RDA Rules

Identifying Original and Translation in same resource

RESOURCE DESCRIPTION & ACCESS RDA

QUESTION:

This is in regards to 2011352604, which contains both the original text in Sanskrit and the Hindi translation. In AACR2, we would have had a 240 of Kalyāṇakāraka. $l Hindi & Sanskrit. In RDA, we would not have a 240. Instead, in theory, we would give 2 700s (as in the Mail Carrier example from the class materials):

700 02 ‡a Ugrādityācārya, ‡d 8th/9th century. ‡t Kalyāṇakāraka.
700 02 ‡a Ugrādityācārya, ‡d 8th/9th century. ‡t Kalyāṇakāraka. ‡l Hindi.

However, in this case, the 1st 700 would really result in the same N/T string as the 100/245 combo. So is it still required?

ANSWER:

Yes, two 700 name/title analytics.   In some cases the preferred title may be the same as the 245 title proper, but in many other cases it won't be.  We just thought it would always be easier to say "make the analytics" than to say "sometimes you do, and sometimes you don’t".  So it may be redundant in some cases.

RDA Blog : RDA Blog is a blog on Resource Description and Access (RDA), a new library cataloging standard that provides instructions and guidelines on formulating data for resource description and discovery, organized based on the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR), intended for use by libraries and other cultural organizations replacing Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (AACR2). This blog lists description and links to resources on Resource Description & Access (RDA). It is an attempt to bring together at one place all the useful and important information, rules, references, news, and links on Resource Description and AccessFRBRFRADFRSADMARC standardsAACR2BIBFRAME, and other items related to current developments and trends in library cataloging practice.

RDA Blog History: RDA Blog was created by Salman Haider, a Cataloging & Metadata Librarian Blogger & Online Social Media Expert from India. RDA Blog embarked on its journey to provide useful information to Resource Description and Access (RDA) in August 2011. It received good response from librarians, catalogers, and library professionals from all around the world. It is interesting to note that the first hundred thousand pageviews to RDA Blog came in 3 years, but it took just 8 months to reach another hundred thousand pageviews. At present it is viewed at a rate of fifteen to twenty thousand times per month. RDA Blog is widely followed in social media.

Acronyms as variants in RDA NARs

RESOURCE DESCRIPTION & ACCESS RDA

QUESTION:

Would the same rules for qualifying a corporate body apply to both the heading and the variants? For example, would this be appropriate under RDA:
110 2_ Progressive Artists Group (Jaipur, India)
410 2_ PAG (Jaipur, India)
We would never qualified "PAG" under AACR2 when it's used as a variant form. When it's used as a heading, of course, then we would qualify. What about in RDA?

ANSWER:

We had a very specific LCRI practice that basically forbade the adding of qualifiers to many kinds of references, we got rid of those restrictions on variants because they represented an exception that wasn't really important and only caused confusion. 11.13.2.1 tells you that you can add the same additions to variants as to authorized access points.

For personal names see RDA Rule 9.19.2.1

Differentiating Names of Persons: Questions

Join RDA Cataloging, a companion Google+ Community for this blog and discuss/answer/comment on a question on "Differentiating Names of Persons in RDA".

According to RDA: Additions to the name are given as instructed under 9.19.1.2–9.19.1.6

•9.19.1.2 (9.4 and 9.6): Title or other designation associated with the person
–Required for certain names

•9.19.1.3 (9.3.2/9.3.3): Date of birth and/or death
–Give if available

•9.19.1.4 (9.5): Fuller form of name
–Add to differentiate (LC!)

•9.19.1.5 (9.3.4): Period of activity of person
–Add to differentiate

•9.19.1.6 (9.16): Profession or occupation
–Required for certain names; Can add to differentiate

QUESTION: Can we still use qualifiers to 100 field according to MARC X00 - Personal Names-General Information to differentialte in Name Authority Records of different persons with same name
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://www.loc.gov/marc/authority/adx00.html

can we use qualifier in subfield $c which is defined as:

$c - Titles and other words associated with a name
Includes qualifying information such as
•titles designating rank, office, or nobility, e.g., Sir
•terms of address, e.g., Mrs.
•initials of an academic degree or denoting membership in an organization, e.g., F.L.A.
•a roman numeral used with a surname
•other words or phrases associated with the name, e.g., clockmaker, Saint.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please note

RDA Rule 9.19.1.2 Title or Other Designation Associated with the Person
Add to the name one or more of the following elements (in this order), as applicable:
a)a title of royalty (see 9.4.1.4) or nobility (see 9.4.1.5)
b)the term Saint (see 9.6.1.4)
c)title of religious rank (see 9.4.1.6–9.4.1.8)
d)the term Spirit (see 9.6.1.5)
e)the profession or occupation (see 9.16) for a person whose name consists of a phrase or appellation not conveying the idea of a person.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

EXAMPLES OF SITUATIONS : suppose there is an NAR already established as [100-1- Haider, Salman]. Now while cataloging we come across a different person named as "Salman Haider"

Question 1: Can we use Dr. in subfield c to differentiate NAR. (e.g. only information available on the resource Dr. Salman Haider ; no other information available on the resource or on the web)
Question 2: Can we use Ph. D. in subfield to differentiate NAR (e.g. only information available on the resource Salman Haider, Ph. D. ; no other information available on the resource or on the web)
Question 3: Can we use period of activity of the person belonging to 20th/21st century in subfield to differentiate NAR (e.g. only information available on the resource Salman Haider ; no other information available on the resource or on the web)

Order of Elements in Note Area in RDA according to ISBD and related RDA Rules

RESOURCE DESCRIPTION & ACCESS RDA

Question. Is there any rule in RDA for the sequence of “notes” in a MARC bibliographic record?

Answer: There is no prescribed order on recording notes.  Background information: RDA Appendix D 1.1 shows the ISBD arrangement of notes based on areas of the record as in AACRR2.

Instructions from CONSER Editing Guide:

Notes in records for continuing resources fall into two categories:

1)   Notes input in the 5XX note fields, and;
2)   Notes generated on output from other fields in the record (e.g., 246, 310, etc.).

The 5XX fields contain general notes (field 500) and specific notes (fields 525, 550, 588, etc.) that cannot be generated from another field.

Other fields that may generate notes are: 022, 037, 074, 086, 222, 246, 310, 321, 362 (indicator value "1"), 760-787. These fields generally have display constants that identify the specific type of information supplied in the note.
246 11 Denki Gakkai ronbunshi
May display as:
Parallel Title: Denki Gakkai ronbunshi

Order of notes
5XX notes are input in numeric tag order.  If necessary, specific instructions are provided within individual fields for the multiple input of notes having the same tag number. The integration of 5XX notes with notes generated on output from other fields must be specified by the institution's output program.
